Explaining Sadaqah
Sadaqah is a voluntary act of charity intended to gain God's favor. Sadaqah refers to an optional act of charity directed at others, be it through kindness, love, empathy, or belief. These actions are not always physical or financial. Basic acts of kindness like a smile or offering assistance are regarded as forms of sadaqah. The direct translation is ‘justice’. Nevertheless, in contemporary times, it has come to signify 'voluntary philanthropy'. The term originates from ‘sidq’, signifying honesty. This implies that sadaqah is a virtuous action that reflects genuine faith.
Benefits of Giving Sadaqah
Sadaqah prevents misfortune and enhances livelihood and blessings in a person's life. Allah states in the Qur'an, "Who is willing to lend Allah a goodly loan, that He may increase it for him manyfold?" “And it is Allah who restricts and provides abundantly, and to Him you will return” (Qur’an, 2: 245).
